Sculpting A Giant Foam Tooth For Ghost Town Dentist Sign. http://www.hollywoodhaunter.com/ How to carve and make a large large tooth prop for a western ghost town . We share a behind the scenes video how we carved and sculpted a foam tooth for our Dr. DeKay Dentist sign for the Barber Shop Facade that will go in our old western mining ghost town themed yard haunt this Halloween in October called Grave Rock Gulch. The tooth is 14" wide and 24" tall. The size of the foam sculpture was determined by the old western sign we had fabricated prior. The sculpting tools used were a reciprocating saw, hand saw, and a keyhole saw for drywall. My favorite carving tool is my trusty horse hair brush which works well for me. I also use several hand files and different grit sand papers. I do use a tape measure from time to time but mostly go from a visual looking at an image I liked of a molar with four roots. After I carved the tooth I added several cavities because its supposed to be a decayed tooth. After sanding and smoothing I blew off all the loose foam beads and hard coated the tooth with a foam safe laminating resin. There are several options out there for boats etc. but its meant for covering the foam first and then you could go back and fiberglass and use a polyester or something that usually melts and eats the styrene. Once dry I applied a white primer coat followed by a tinted off eggshell white. I used a black and watered it down to paint around all the cavities. To hang the tooth we attached an eye bolt through a piece of plywood and screwed 3" long screws at an angle to temporarily hold until the hard coat dried. we will replace the chain with something smaller and less noticeable. Thanks for watching and be sure to check out the making of the barber shop facade, links below.
